This is a school-wide expectation at each grade level, so 8th grade students are already experienced with it. I am moving it up to the next level in expectations in order to prepare them for high school. We will write a persuasive essay each Thursday. Usually, 20 minutes of class time will be devoted to it. This would be enough time to write a paragraph that earns a "C." If a student wants to work toward a B or an A, it will require some homework. Sometimes the entire essay will be homework.
Essays are due each Monday. Here is a copy of the scoring rubric (Students self-score, then I check it.) About once a month I will go over papers for conventions.
